Bentley also known as Bentley Motors Limited is an English automobile manufacturer of luxury cars and Grand Tourers. The company was founded by Walter Owen Bentley in England on January 18, 1919. Bentley’s design was a high tech four-cylinder engine with a sturdy chassis known as the Bentley 3 Litre. This was the first care to use four valves per cylinder and dual spark plugs. He had several successes on the racing field; however, it was not enough to keep the car factory going. He had to sell a majority share in order to raise enough cash to keep his company afloat. He also designed the six cylinder 6 ½ Litre even though his control over the company was slipping away.
The early Bentleys include the 3 L from 1921 to 1929, the 6 ½ L from 1926 to 1930, the Speed Six from 1928 until 1930, the 4 ½ L from 1926 to 1930, the Blower from 1928 until 1930, the 8 L in 1930 and 1931 and the 4 L in 1931.
The Wall Street crash affected Bentley, as these racing cars were not in demand during the Great Depression.
Because of this, Bentley along with his partner Barnato sold the company to an anonymous holding company, British Central Equitable Trust in 1931. This was in fact Rolls Royce; however, Rolls closed the racing department.
Bentley left Rolls Royce and moved the racing department to Lagonda. Bentley went into racing in which his Lagonda MG45 Rapide won the Le Mans in 1935. Under the Rolls Royce brand Bentley models such as the Mark V, Corniche, Mark VI, Continental, Camargue, Mulsanne, Brooklands, Turbo S, Turbo R, and Azure were manufactured.
Rolls Royce along with Bentley Motors was purchased by Volkswagen in 1998. BMW and Volkswagen agreed that Volkswagen would create both the Bentley and Rolls Royce cars until the end of 2002.
Queen Elizabeth II was presented with a Bentley in 2002 to celebrate the Golden Jubilee.
In 2005, Bentley sales were very good with 8,627 sold throughout the world. In the Unites States alone 3,654 were sold. Recent Bentley models include the Arnage Saloon in 1998, the Hunaudieres Concept in 1999, the State Limousine in 2002, the Continental GT coupe in 2003, the Continental Flying Spur saloon in 2005, the Azure convertible in 2006, the Continental GTC convertible in 2006, the Bentley Brooklands coupe in 2007 and plans for the Bentley SUV in 2009.
