Alfa Romeo is an Italian automobile manufacture, which was founded as Societa Anonima Italiana Darracq in 1906 by Cavaliere Ugo Stella along with a French automobile firm of Alexandre Darracq.
The first car was produced in Naples, however, the partnership between Cavaliere and Alexandre dissolved, and other Italian co-investors were found. With new investors, the factory was moved to Portello a Milan suburb. At this time the company was renamed A.L.F.A., which stood for Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili.
The first car manufactured under the name A.L.F.A. was in 1910 by the name of “1910 24 HP” which was designed by Giuseppe Merosi. Later on Merosi would design even more ALFA cars that would have powerful engines such as the 40-60 HP.
ALFA did not only manufacture automobiles but ventured into motor racing. In the 1911 Targa Florio the drivers included Franchini and Ronzoni which drove two 24 HP models.
World War I stopped ALFA from producing automobiles as it did many other manufactures. However, after only three years ALFA was back in production.
In 1916, ALFA was transformed into a factory to create military hardware for the Italian and Allied war efforts under the direction of Nicola Romeo. After the war, Romeo took over the complete control of the company and automobile production began again in 1919.
The company name was changed in 1920 to Alfa Romeo, which has stayed with the company until today. The first car of the assembly line under the new company name was the Torpedo 20-30 HP.
During the 1960’s Alfa Romeo designed small cars for the Italian police, which included the famous “Guilia Super” or the 2600 Sprint GT. Alfa Romeo, was purchased by Fiat in 1986.
Some of the most popular current automobiles with the Alfa Romeo Badge include Alfa Romeo 147, Alfa Romeo 159, Alfa Romeo 166, Alfa Romeo GT, Alfa Romeo Brera, Alfa Romeo Spider, and the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione.
We all have seen these unique cars in such movies as “The Graduate” with Dustin Hoffman driving the “Alfa Romeo Spider”, in the James Bond movie Octopussy with the GTV6 driven of course by Bond, and in the television crime series, Ein Fall fur Zwei with the leading actor Claus Theo Gartner driving an Alfa Romeo.
