The turbocharged Buick Grand National is a hallmark car in the resurgence of muscle cars. In the mid-eighties, the Grand National was introduced as the fastest production car ever built. The Buick Grand National would hold this record for almost two decades.
Introduced in 1982, the Buick Grand National was designed to celebrate Buick's back-to-back wins in NASCAR's Winston Cup Grand National Series, hence the name. However, it was the models produced between 1984 and 1987 that truly captured the imagination of car enthusiasts.
Under the hood, the Grand National was not your typical Buick. Powered by a turbocharged V6 engine, instead of the traditional V8 found in muscle cars of the era, the 1987 model in particular boasted a 3.8-liter turbocharged and intercooled V6 that produced 235 horsepower and a whopping 330 lb-ft of torque. This allowed the Grand National to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in under 5 seconds.
In 1987, Buick also released a limited version called the GNX (Grand National Experimental), produced in collaboration with McLaren Performance Technologies/ASC. This variant was even more powerful and had various upgrades over the standard Grand National, making it a highly sought-after collector's item today.
