Lotus is a sports and racing automobile manufacturer. Even though the company, Lotus Engineering Ltd. was not formed until 1952, Colin Chapman was building cars in 1948. The first car created by Chapman began with an old 1930 Austin Seven. By early 1948, the new Mark I was complete. His designed was registered OX 9292 and as a Lotus.
Chapman graduated as a civil engineer in 1948 and started working on his second creation. His second car was the very first Lotus that was usable on the road. He sold the second design to Mike Lawson in October 1950 who won the Wrotham Cup driving the ingenious Lotus.
The Mark 3 was created in 1951 as the first car designed specifically for circuit racing. Finally, in 1952, the Lotus Engineering Company was formed and Chapman built a Mark 4, which was lighter and more powerful for Mike Lawson. The Mark 6 racer was also built during this year.
Lotus encouraged its customers to race their cars and in 1954, Team Lotus was formed. In 1960, a Lotus Formula One car won the Grand Prix with driver Stirling Moss behind the wheel. In 1963, the Lotus 25 won the F1 World Constructors Championship with Jim Clark behind the wheel. Team Lotus was active in racing from 1958 until 1994. World championship Formula One driver’s including: Jim Clark in 1963, Jim Clark in 1965, Jochen Rindt in 1970, Emerson Fittipaldi in 1972, Mario Andretti in 1978.
Chapman passed away in 1982. Lotus Engineering Ltd. was sold to General Motors in 1986; however, General Motors sold the company to A.C.B.N. Holdings S.A. of Luxembourg on August 27, 1993. ACBN Holdings S.A. is owned by Bugatti Automolili SpA. A majority of the Lotus shares were sold to Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Bhd in 1996. The company is known as the Group Lotus. Group Lotus is divided into two sections, which are Lotus Cars and Lotus Engineering.
The cars currently manufactured by Lotus include the Lotus Elise, the Lotus Exige, the Lotus Exige S, the Lotus Europa S, the Lotus Esprit, and the Lotus 2-Eleven.
