Ferrari is an Italian sports car manufacturer that is known around the world for their sleek looking cars that are not only fast, but also classy.

Enzo Ferrari was born close by Modena, Italy on February 18, 1898. He got his first taste of racing when he was 10 years old at an automobile race in Bologna, Italy. This is when he decided he wanted to be a racecar driver.

Later while working for a small car maker, he took up racing. He finished in 9th place in 1919 at the Targa Florio. Shortly after the race, he found employment with Alfa Romeo. Still racing he drove a 1920 Targa Florio and came in 2nd place.

In 1923, Ferrari had the honor of meeting Count Enrico and Countess Paolina Baracca during a race at the Circuit of Sivocci at Ravenna. The Count and Countess were parents of the Francesco Baracca who was at Italian pilot that died on Mount Montello during the war. After his death, the Count and Countess gave Ferrari their son’s squadron badge the famous prancing horse on a yellow shield.

Ferrari only built a few racing cars bearing his name and the famous prancing horse shield. Finally, in 1929, Ferrari formed the Scuderia Ferrari a club aimed for organizing racing members. This team competed in 22 events and scored eight victories with the other placings very good.

Ferrari left Alfa Romeo in 1940 and began a new company by the name of Auto-Avio Costruzioni Ferrari. The shop was destroyed by bombs in 1944, however, by 1946, the shop was rebuilt, and Ferrari started work on the first Ferrari motorcar.

This first road car was seen in 1947 by the name of the 125 S Ferrari. It had a 1.5 L V12 engine. Ferrari never really liked any of customers, as he believed many of them were only buy the automobile for the prestige that came with owning a Ferrari instead of its performance.

Some of the Ferrari styling over the years has come from design houses such as Pininfarina, Scaglietti, Bertone, Touring, Ghia, and Vignale.
